Hi,

I am looking for a hosting service for an initial small Windows MVC 3 + SQL Server DB. I want to include logging in the application, i.e. log events inside my c# application so I can spot errors or performance issues. I am thinking shared windows server.

My question is, what do other people do about logging and do WebWiz provide any tools/help here? I am looking at Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) which is good but heavy (need access to run logman.exe program), but there are loads of other methods that simply output a text log file.

Also, any ideas on staging server, i.e. a separate test server from the main server. Do have to buy two separate servers to keep them separate?

Thanks for any help on this.

The type of logging that you are looking for would not be supported by shared hosting and sounds to me like you would need to have your own server such as the ones below:-

You could look at other logging options. You do have access to server log files which could be used, or you could use the custom errors to fire a page that emails any web site errors to yourself.

If you wanted a live set and some type of development website you could create a sub domain for development which would be separate from the mail website and would run in it's own process, but would not run on a different server.

Thanks Bruce. That makes sense. Still in design mode at the moment so I will most likely go with a logging method taht outputs a file with the option of emails for serious errors.

Thanks also for the info on staging/live web site. I will look into that at the time.
